Happy New Year readers! Well, it’s been over a week into 2023 already — you might be moving on from last year, trying to look forward to the best ahead. But we just need to go back to 2022 one last time to get our hands on the best eShop games this December.

Now, December is usually a quiet month for game releases — but Nintendo king To drop five mini short videos for a standalone show in the House of Indies festive series just before Christmas. Some of these had droplets of shadow in them that made our wallets look lighter than usual for this time of year. We are really spoiled!

Before we get to the best of December 2022, let’s talk about one of those Drops of Shadow, the game many have been anticipating for a long time – Sports Story – and which we said in our review “there’s no denying that it feels like a disappointment after years of waiting.” We hope this new patch fixed a few things!

Well, with that out of the way, here are our eShop picks for December!

honorific

As a special late holiday treat, we’ve expanded the field to some of those 7/10s we served late in the year – which included a few drops of shade. Our plan going forward is to stick pretty much to 8/10s, but this time around, we wanted to highlight more games than usual. So, let’s take a look at what we missed in our top three:

Inscryption (Switch eShop)

Inscryption (Switch eShop)

publisher: Devolver Digital / Developer: Daniel Mullins Games

Release date: December 1, 2022 (United States of America) / December 1, 2022 (United Kingdom / European Union)

There should be no surprises when seeing this on the list. The beloved Inscryption in 2021 is a disguised deck generator, a game that plays games with you. While you’ll have to play cards in the game (within a game within a game), it’s the meta, horror, and weirdness that makes Inscryption so special. You always know you’re in for a wild ride when you play Daniel Mullins, and this game is no exception. It’s delightfully smart, and feels right at home on the Switch. It was worth waiting a year.

It got an 8/10 from us, which is pretty good for a Switch port that came out just over a year later.

Chained Echoes (Switch eShop)

Chained Echoes (Switch eShop)

publisher: DECK13 Spotlight / Developer: Mathias Linda

Release date: December 8, 2022 (United States of America) / December 8, 2022 (United Kingdom / European Union)

One of the few J-inspired indie RPGs that we can say with confidence Feel Like the SNES game, Chained Echoes is a blend of the best elements of some of the 16-bit classics while forging its own identity with modern comforts, emotion, and heart. The battle system is fast and unique. The maps are big and fun to explore; And you can ride the mechanics! There’s a lot to love – and it’s all been largely developed by one person. Mad!

Chained Echoes got a 9/10 from us, which is well deserved. If you like classic JRPGs like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, and even PS1 favorites like Xenogears, give this a try.

Lil Gator game (Switch eShop)

Lil Gator game (Switch eShop)

publisher: Playtonic Friends / Developer: megawobble

Release date: December 14, 2022 (United States of America) / December 14, 2022 (United Kingdom / European Union)

But for the NL team in general, we were looking for something nice and relaxing over the offseason. Something that can take us back to our childhood, where our imagination can run wild and we can create our own adventures, run around, and dress up. The Lil’ Gator is just that.

Short and sweet, though genuinely creative, Lil Gator evokes the best parts of our childhoods. It captures the warm, carefree nature we all felt when we were running around and having fun like little kids. And the beautiful series-shaded visuals and autumnal landscapes perfectly match the tone of the game. #

With an 8/10 of us and an amazing fanbase here at Nintendo Life Towers, Lil Gator is our eShop Select for December 2022.

How do we decide our online store picks the top three: As we get to the end of each month, the Nintendo Life team votes on their favorite titles from a list of games hand-picked by the editorial team. To qualify for this list, these games must have been released as a digital-only Nintendo Switch eShop title in that particular month, and must have been reviewed on Nintendo Life; We select eligible games based on the results of their review.

The staff is then asked to vote for three matches that they think deserve to sit at the top of the list; The first choice gets 3 points, the second choice gets 2 points, and the third one gets 1 point. These votes are then tallied to create a list of the top three, with the overall winner taking home the first prize for the month.
