LOS ANGELES – Adam Rich, the child actor with a page mop who mesmerized TV audiences as “America’s Little Brother” on Eight is enough, Die. He was 54 years old.

Rich died Saturday at his home in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles, Lt. Amy Earl of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office said. The cause of death is still under investigation but is not considered suspicious.

Rich had a limited acting career after starring at the age of eight as Nicholas Bradford, the youngest of eight children, on the ABC drama that ran from 1977 to 1981.

He had several encounters with police regarding drugs and alcohol – and sought treatment at the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage.

Rich suffered from a type of depression that defies treatment, and he tried to erase the stigma of talking about mental illness, says advertising analyst Danny Derani. He unsuccessfully tried experimental treatments over the years.

Derani said he and others close to Rich had been worried in recent weeks when they couldn’t reach him.

“He was just a kind, generous, loving soul,” Dirani told the Associated Press. “Being a famous actor isn’t necessarily what he wanted to be… He didn’t have an ego, not an ounce of it.”

Rich discussed his mental health on Twitter and noted in October that he had been sober for seven years. He hasn’t been perfect, he said—referring to arrests, numerous rehab stints, numerous overdoses and “countless detoxes (and) relapses”—and urged his 19,000 followers to never give up.

“Humans were not built to tolerate mental illness,” Rich tweeted in September. “Just the fact that some people consider these to be weak, or lacking in willpower is quite laughable…because it’s quite the opposite! It takes a very, very strong person…a warrior if you will…to fight against such diseases.”

Rich posted a photo of himself from his prime with baby star Mickey Rooney.

“Everyone used to tell me ‘You’re the modern day Mickey Rooney,'” he wrote on Twitter. “But when Mickey Rooney told me that himself, it meant so much to me!”
