Amazon Inks Crucial Role in First Look TV Deal and Movies Overall, Greenlights ‘Mighty Nein’ Animated Series

Amazon has made a strong embrace of the critically acclaimed cinematic universe.

Amazon Studios has announced an exclusive multi-year comprehensive TV and First Look movie deal with Critical Role, the media company and D&D group behind Prime Video’s popular adult animated series “The Legend of Vox Machina.”

The first new series to be produced under the agreement is “Mighty Nein,” based on the second Critical Role campaign, which ran from January 2018 to mid-2021. Only the Mighty Nein – a group of criminals and misfits – can stop the kingdom from descending into chaos. When a mysterious artifact capable of reshaping reality falls into the wrong hands. Production on “Mighty Nein” is set to begin soon in partnership with animation studio Titmouse, which collaborated with Critical Role and Amazon Studios on “Vox Machina.” The series will premiere exclusively on Prime Video, but there’s no release date yet.

Critical Role’s first animated series, “The Legend of Vox Machina,” is based on their first D&D campaign, which the group aired live from 2015 to 2017. Season 1 premiered January 2022 on Prime Video (and is still It holds a 100% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes), and the second season debuted with the first three episodes on January 20. The third season of “Vox Machina” was officially announced at New York Comic Con and is currently in production.

Under the deal with Amazon Studios, Critical Role will continue to produce under its production banner, Metapigeon, which will develop its own TV shows, films and original content while continuing to “partner with talented creators on a new slate of projects, in and out of the Critical Role world,” according to the companies.

“With the success of our animated series ‘The Legend of Vox Machina’, we look forward to continuing our relationship with the critical role and expanding his universe with ‘Mighty Nein’,” said Vernon Sanders, President of Worldwide Television at Amazon Studios. “Expanding these iconic franchises for our global Prime Video customers continues to be an ambitious and rewarding journey and we’re excited to see where this new series takes us.”

Seeing the stories and characters from our first campaign come to life in ‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ was a dream come true , and we’re excited to do it again with ‘Mighty Nein.’ But with today’s announcement, we’re confident that the stories we tell will continue to expand into the realms of entertainment beyond what we can imagine.”

The upcoming “Mighty Nein” series will be produced by Tasha Huo, Sam Riegel, and Willingham, along with Metapigeon and Amazon Studios. from Titmouse, and Chris Prynoski (“Legend of Vox Machina”), Shannon Prynoski (“Fairfax”), Antonio Canobio (“Arlo the Alligator Boy”) and Ben Kalina (“Big Mouth”) will also executive produce.

Amazon Studios first entered into a Critical Role agreement in 2019, securing a two-season order for “Vox Machina” after a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign for its first animated project.

Critical Role began in 2012 as a private D&D game night among a group of friends in Los Angeles who are all voice actors. Since then, Critical Role – whose ardent fans are known as “Critters” – has expanded into multiple areas of work. Plus “The Legend of Vox Machina” on Prime Video, which featured comic books, graphic novels, fantasy and non-fiction books on the New York Times bestseller list, collectibles, board games, role-playing, podcasts, and live events.
